This report describes the method of coloured opal finish of knit fabric using wool/nylon blended yarn. First we prepared the printing paste including the vat dye, zinc formaldehyde sulfoxylate (Redol ZB), sodium hydroxide and processed starch stock paste and then printed the fabric with this paste. The printed knit fabric was dried and steamed for 30 minutes. By means of a steaming procedure, the nylon fiber of the printed knit fabric was dyed with the vat dye and the wool fiber was dissolved by sodium hydroxide. After that the knit fabric was washed thoroughly with water, so the coloured and watermarked design was made on the knit fabric. As the result of the colour fastness test, all vat dyes we used on the nylon fiber showed good colour fastness to dry cleaning, perspiration, rubbing, but several vat dyes showed poor lightfastness. We also measured the breaking strength of finished knit fabric and found that there was no decrease in strength of nylon fiber after this treatment.
